NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team recorded their third straight shutout victory, as the Camels defeated host UMass Boston 1-0 on Saturday afternoon from Edward T. Barry Rink. With the win, Conn improves to 3-4 overall, while UMass Boston falls to 7-4.
Conn started strong, putting the first two shots on goal, but both Caitlin Pierce (Edgewater, N.J.) and Jess Pistorino (Charlestown, Mass.) were stopped by Leah Bosch. UMass Boston answered with their first shot at 6:54 but Jillian Wexler (Plainsboro, N.J.) answered her first test. The Beacons earned a late power play in the opening frame, and recorded two shots on Wexler, but the Camels netminder held firm as the game was scoreless after one.
Conn dominated the first ten minutes of the middle frame, outshooting UMass Boston 7-0, but the Camels were unable to break the ice. The Beacons answered with the next two shots, but again Wexler was sharp. Neither side found the opening goal, as the game was 0-0 heading to the third.
UMass Boston opened the final frame on the front foot, putting three of the first four shots of the period on goal, but Wexler turned them aside. At 5:29 Conn was awarded their first power play of the afternoon and the Camels took advantage. Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) and Sofia Donnelly (Ringwood, N.J.) connected before finding Kiley Smith (Humble, Texas) who fired home to make it 1-0 at 6:35. With two minutes left in regulation, the Beacons pulled the goal for the extra attack, however, Conn shutdown UMass Boston to come away with the 1-0 win.
Conn outshoot UMass Boston 38-12, while the Beacons held a slim 24-21 edge on face-off wins.
Wexler tallied her second straight shutout, stopping all 12 shots faced. Smith tallied the lone goal of the afternoon, with Donnelly and Sammons both picking up an assist. Kate Hagness (Madison, Conn.) led the way with six shots on goal, while Sammons led the way in the face-off circle, winning eight draws. Conn finished the contest 3-3 on the penalty kill and 1-2 on the power play.
Bosch finished the game stopping 37 of 38 shots in goal for UMass Boston. Katie Wilbert paced the Beacons with three shots on goal, while UMass Boston finished 1-2 on the penalty kill and 0-3 on the power play.
Conn returns to action in the new year, heading to Middletown, Conn. to take on Wesleyan University on Saturday, January 4th at 2:00 p.m. for a non-conference match-up.
