PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team posted a 70-61 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Monday night at the Wildcat Center.
Conn, which played from in front for the majority of the contest, handed JWU its first loss of the season.
Catherine Cole (Lebanon, N.H.) led three Camels in double figures with a career-high 18 points, and
Addi Hunter (Saint George, Vt.) pitched in 15 points while
Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) chipped in 14.
In the opening quarter, Xerras and Cole each knocked down a pair of threes as the Conn offense came out humming. Xerras netted eight points in the period and staked the Camels to a 23-18 lead after one.
Catie Donadio (Clinton, Conn.) opened the second-quarter scoring with a triple of her own to put the Camels up eight. When the margin shrunk to two with 3:42 to go in the half, Xerras answered back with another three to keep Conn on top. Hunter then scored the final four points of the stanza as the visitors went into the intermission with their biggest lead of the half at 39-30.
Cole and
Hallie O'Toole (Wilbraham, Mass.) combined for 11 of the team's 19 points in the third as the Camels continued to add to the lead. In the fourth, a jumper by Hunter gave Conn its biggest advantage of the night at 65-46 with 6:27 to play. A late charge by the Wildcats brought the deficit back to single digits in the final minutes, but Conn was never in any real danger.
Hunter also led the effort on the glass with a career-high 14 rebounds while Cole grabbed seven. Conn finished the game with a 52-35 edge on the boards. The Camels also assisted on 18 of 25 field goals, with Hunter dishing out a game-high six helpers.
Brianne Foley paced JWU (6-1 overall) with 16 points.
Conn (7-3 overall) will enjoy a three-week break before playing next at Babson College on Monday, December 30 at 3:00 p.m.
