NEW LONDON, Conn. – Amherst College scored five goals in the third period, to pull away from the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team, as the Camels fell 7-3 on Saturday from Dayton Arena. With the loss, Conn falls to 9-11-2 overall and 7-9-0 in NESCAC play, while Amherst improves to 13-8-1 overall and 8-7-1 in conference action.
Amherst (13-8-1, 8-7-1 NESCAC) came out strong, forcing an early save from Sean Dynan (Reading, Mass.). Conn (9-11-2, 7-9-0 NESCAC) got their first shot, as Logan Cleary (Mentor, Ohio) had his shot stopped. Both goalies were strong through the opening 20 minutes, as the game was scoreless after one.
The Mammoths opened the scoring at 8:51 on a goal from Ryan Tucker. Just a minute and a half later, Amherst doubled their lead on a marker from Connor Guest. After giving up the two quick goals, the Camels pushed to cut the deficit. At 17:25 Steven Ardagna (Roswell, Ga.) fed a lovely pass to Cole Eichler (King, Ontario) who made no mistake, making it 2-1, as John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) earned the secondary assist, but Conn trailed heading to the third period.
The Camels got an early power play, but on the ensuing man advantage, the Mammoths scored two shorthanded goals to quickly extend the lead to 4-1 three minutes in. 45 seconds later, Amherst added another goal, pushing the lead to 5-1, before adding two more goals by 8:36 as the score went to 7-1. The Camels responded just over a minute later, after Will Winship (Andover, Mass.) had his shot blocked, Cleary picked up the rebound and tucked the puck behind Alex Wisco. Conn found a shorthanded tally themselves at 12:09, when Rocco Testa-Basi (Holland Patent, N.Y.) went in on a breakaway, beating Wisco making it 7-3. However, that was as close as the Camels got, falling 7-3.
Amherst outshot Conn 45-33, while the Camels won 42 of 74 draws.
Dynan got the start in goal, finishing 30 saves on 35 shots, before being replaced by Will McEvoy (Ottawa, Ontario) who stopped eight of 10. Seven Camels recorded one point, as Cleary, Eichler, and Testa-Basi all notched a goal, while Testa-Basi led the way with five shots on goal. Kei Yasuda (Nagoya, Japan) won 12 of 22 draws, while Conn went 3-3 on the penalty kill with a shorthanded goal, and 0-3 on the power play.
Wisco earned the win, finishing with 30 saves. Tucker paced the Mammoths with four points on three goals and one assist, while Amherst went 0-3 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill.
Conn heads out on the road for the final time in the regular season next weekend, making the trek to Maine, opening against Colby on Friday night at 7:00 p.m. in Waterville, Maine.
