Women's Hockey Falls to #13 Colby

NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team fell to No. 13 Colby College 4-2 on Friday night from Dayton Arena. With the loss, Conn falls to 7-10-6 overall and 2-10-3 in NESCAC play, while Colby improves to 15-7-1 overall and 7-7-1 in conference action.

Conn (7-10-6, 2-10-3) had the first good look of the contest as Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) was sprung on a breakaway at 1:20, but her effort was stopped. Shortly after Colby (15-7-1, 7-7-1 NESCAC) opened the scoring on a tally from Breanna Studley at 1:48. Midway through the period, the Mules doubled their lead as Beth Sinson's shot went off the post and in. Late in the period, Colby extended the lead to three, as Megan Martodam tapped home a loose puck, to make it 3-0 after one.

The Camels got an early power play in the middle frame, looking to get back into the contest. On the ensuing advantage, Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) fired a shot over the shoulder of Grace Caligiuri at 3:31 to make it 3-1, with Sydney Frank (Stillwater, N.Y.) and Abby Munger (Trinity, Fla.) earning the assists. At 13:32 the Mules pushed the lead back to three on a goal from Courtney Schumacher. In the dying seconds, Conn got a lifeline. Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) was able to keep the puck in at the blueline, finding Jess Pistorino (Charlestown, Mass.) who's shot was tipped by Sydney Cresta (Swampscott, Mass.) to cut it to 4-2 heading to the third.

Conn started the final frame strong, looking to cut the deficit to one. However, midway through the period, Colby had a breakaway looking to put the game away, but Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) kept the Camels alive. Just a minute later, the Camels nearly made it a one goal game, as Charlotte Harris' (Ystrad Mynach, Wales) shot was stopped, but the rebound almost trickled. Conn pulled Galizio and got a power play in the final minute, but were unable to capitalize, falling 4-2.

Colby outshot Conn 33-19, while winning 33 of 55 draws.

Galizio got the start in goal, finishing with 29 saves. Six Camels tallied one point, as Cresta and Sammons both notched a goal, while Chesner, Frank, Munger, and Pistorino all added one assist. Cresta led the way in the face-off circle winning nine of 19 draws, while Conn went 1-4 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill.

Cagliari got the nod in net making 17 saves. Six Mules recorded one point, while Colby went 1-5 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill.

Conn wraps up the regular season tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. when the Camels celebrate senior day against No. 13 Colby in Dayton Arena.
