Late Push Propels #19 Middlebury Past Men's LAX

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team dropped a 14-10 final to No. 19 Middlebury College on Friday evening at Youngman Field.

The Panthers scored four unanswered goals in the final 9:00 to secure the victory. Tom Conley finished with three goals and three assists to lead the Middlebury attack.

Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.) notched his third-straight hat trick to pace the Camels, and Bobby Chang (South Salem, N.Y.) and Patrick Atkins (Topsfield, Mass.) each chipped in two goals and an assist. Will Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) made 18 saves in goal to keep Conn in contention.

The Camels came out hot in the opening quarter and jumped on top early. Chang fed Jack Tenzer (Charlotte, N.C.) for the game's first goal, and later he added back-to-back scores of his own to make it 3-1. Horkan and JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) netted goals in the final 22 seconds of the period to give Conn a 5-2 advantage after one.

Middlebury limited Conn to a single goal in the second quarter and closed the gap quickly. A goal by Logan White with 2:41 to play in the half gave the Panthers their first lead at 7-6, and the margin held until the halftime whistle.

Atkins netted both of his goals in the third quarter to keep the Camels close, but Middlebury led 10-8 heading into the final stanza. In the fourth, Horkan scored a man-up goal off an assist from Tenzer, and minutes later he tied the game at 10-10 with an unassisted effort.

Cooper DeMallie put the Panthers up for good with 9:00 left to play, and William Ryan followed with a pair of scores to pad the margin. Goalie Hayden Kern, who finished with 14 saves, turned away Conn's final four shots on goal to protect the lead.

Conn (1-4 overall, 0-4 NESCAC) will next host Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday, March 26 at 7:00 p.m.
