Men's Lacrosse Knocks Off WestConn

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team never trailed en route to a 14-8 non-conference victory over Western Connecticut State University on Tuesday night at Silfen Field.

Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.) led all scorers with six goals to pace the Camels, who got goals from eight different players on the night. JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) added two goals and an assist, and Aidan McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.) and Jack Tenzer (Charlotte, N.C.) chipped in a goal and two assists apiece.

Conn's defense had a strong game, tying a season high with nine caused turnovers. The Camels also held Julian Duque, WestConn's leading scorer at 3.9 goals per game, to only one goal on six shots.

Will Rice (New Rochelle, N.Y.) played nearly 56 minutes in goal and finished with 10 saves. Joey DeMarzo (Madison, N.J.) made his collegiate debut in the final minutes and faced three shots.

Horkan was the catalyst early, providing Conn's first three goals in the opening 11:09 of the contest. Ford added another tally before the quarter was over as the Camels led 4-1 after one.

The Wolves kept within striking distance in the second period, and a score by Matt Sweeney in the final minute of the half trimmed Conn's lead to 6-4 at intermission. Both McAvoy and Ford scored goals for the Camels in the quarter.

Conn started the second half with an extra-man opportunity thanks to a WestConn penalty in the closing seconds of the first. The Camels quickly converted as McAvoy found Horkan for his fourth goal of the night, and the hosts were off and running. Declan Kuhn (Fairfield, Conn.) followed with a fast-break bounce shot that snuck under the crossbar, and tallies by Isaiah Kozub (Wilbraham, Mass.) and Horkan extended the lead to 10-4 with 4:27 left in the third.

The Camels led 10-6 heading into the fourth quarter and scored four straight goals to seal the victory. Horkan netted his sixth during the spurt while Patrick Atkins (Topsfield, Mass.), Tenzer and Jack Gurney (Grafton, Mass.) also found the back of the cage.

The six goals tied a career high for Horkan, who has been on a tear of late. The sophomore attackman has scored 18 goals over the last four games, and has recorded at least a hat trick in each.

Conn (2-4 overall, 0-4 NESCAC) will next play at Williams College on Saturday, March 30 at 1:00 p.m.
