NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's tennis team pulled off a 5-4 upset over No. 44 Trinity College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC showdown at the CC Tennis Courts.
Walker Mulligan (Guilford, Conn.) secured the deciding point at No. 5 singles, winning in a third-set tiebreaker to set off a wild team celebration. The Camels, who improved to 2-7 in league play, kept their postseason chances alive heading into Sunday's regular season finale at Wesleyan University.
Conn started the day by winning two out of three doubles matches to grab a 2-1 advantage. The duo of
Aaron Fleishman (Brookline, Mass.) and
Sigmund Winiecki (Jaffrey, N.H.) took care of business by an 8-4 final at No. 1, and the tandem of
Jared Leong (Petaling Jaya, Malaysia) and Mulligan triumphed 8-6 at No. 2. The Camels nearly made it a clean sweep in doubles, but
Jules Taylor-Kerman (New York, N.Y.) and
James Serhant III (Hadley, Mass.) came up short in the tiebreaker of an 8-7 decision.
Fleishman and Taylor-Kerman cruised to straight-set victories at No. 2 and 3, respectively, to bring the Camels to within a point of victory. That final point nearly came at the top spot, but
Arjun Premkumar (Bangalore, India) was forced to retire despite winning his first set and being tied 6-6 in the second.
The Bantams evened the match behind wins at No. 4 and 6 singles, leaving the battle between Mulligan and Brandon Felcher at No. 5 to decide the winner. Walker captured the first set 7-5 before Felcher bounced back to take the second 6-3, and with the third set even at 6-6 the entire match hinged on a final tiebreaker.
Leading 6-5 in the tiebreaker, Mulligan tracked down a shot on the far right of the baseline and sent a shallow lob back over the net. Felcher's attempt at the return went wide, leaving the Camels with their second conference win of the season.
Conn (9-8 overall) will wrap up regular season play at No. 40 Wesleyan on Sunday, April 28 at 10:00 a.m.
