Men's Soccer Settles for Scoreless Draw Against Bowdoin

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team battled tough playing to a scoreless draw against Bowdoin on Saturday from Freeman Field. With the tie, Conn moves to 2-1-1 on the year and 0-1-1 in NESCAC play, while Bowdoin moves to 3-0-1 overall and 1-0-1 in conference action.

It was a slow start as the conference foes opened the contest feeling each other, but it was Conn that recorded the first four shots, with one effort on target. The teams traded two shots apiece over the final 17 minutes of the first half, but neither side connected, as the game remained scoreless at the break.

The intensity picked up the second half, as the Camels got the first two shots of the half, but both missed. Bowdoin answered with a shot that was blocked before Conn was awarded a freekick just outside of the box. The freekick was taken quickly to Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) who looked to play a ball across the goal, but the Polar Bears cleared it out.

Both teams looked for the opening tally, as Bowdoin recorded their first shot on target at 72:03, but Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda) made light work of it. With time running down, the Camels were once again awarded a freekick on the outside of the box. This time the ball was played to the back post, looking for Spatz who was open, but he just missed. Neither side ultimately found the back of the net, as the teams settled for the 0-0 draw.

Conn outshot Bowdoin 12-6, holding a 2-1 edge on shots on target, and an 8-2 advantage on corner kicks.

Silvester got the start in goal making one save. Jake Creus (Madrid, Spain), Rye Jaran (Downingtown, Pa.) and Spatz led the way with two shots each, while Spatz and Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) both had one effort on target.

Alex Ainsworth recorded two saves in net for Bowdoin, while Felipe Duran paced the Polar Bears with three shot attempts.

Conn returns to action tomorrow as the Camels head to Medford, Mass. to take on Tufts at 3 p.m.
