MEDFORD, Mass.. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team worked hard against #11 Tufts, earning a 0-0 draw on Sunday from Bello Field. With the tie, Conn moves to 2-1-2 on the year and 0-1-2 in NESCAC play, while Tufts moves to 3-0-1 overall and 2-0-1 in conference action.
Both sides came out ready for the conference matchup, as each team recorded a shot on goal in the opening five minutes. Tufts notched the first effort of the contest, forcing a strong save from Peter Silvester (Smiths Parish, Bermuda). Conn answered with Gavin Mpiana (Cape Town, South Africa) putting a shot on target, but his effort was turned aside.
Both sides generated opportunities throughout the half, but the Camels came the closest to opening the scoring. Matt Scoffone (Thornton, Pa.) and Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) both put shots on target, but both were turned aside as the game was scoreless at the break.
Tufts opened the second half on the front foot recording two shots in the opening four minutes. The first effort for the Jumbos went off target, before Silvester turned away Bijan Akhtarzandi-Das's shot. Just a few minutes later, Conn had back-to-back chances to open the scoring, but both Rye Jaran (Downingtown, Pa.) and Jack Kelesoglu (Westfield, N.J.) had an effort blocked.
Between the 61st and 74th minutes, Conn again had some good looks at goal, however Scoffone and Christian Perugini (Medway, Mass.) had shots stopped by Nikola Antic. Tufts upped the pressure in the final 15 minutes, but Silvester and the Camels defense held the Jumbos at bay. In the final ninety seconds, a bouncing ball made its way to Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajuela, Costa Rica) who fired on net, but was stopped by Antic, as the game ended 0-0.
Tufts held a slim 14-12 edge on shots, while Conn had a 6-3 advantage on shots on target and a 4-0 edge on corner kicks.
Silvester continued his strong play between the sticks, recording three saves. Five Camels recorded at least one shot on target as Scoffone notched two, while Mpiana, Perugini, Quiros-Newton, and Spatz all tallied one.
Antic made six saves in goal for Tufts, while three different Jumbos recorded one shot on target.
