WATERVILLE, Maine. – The Connecticut College field hockey team picked up its first NESCAC win of the season on Saturday afternoon, topping Colby College by a 1-0 final at Bill Alfond Field.
The Camels scored early in the second half and made the margin stand, securing a win over the Mules for the third year in a row.
Rowan Galanis (Ipswich, Mass.) provided the winner on a penalty stroke for her second goal of the season, and
Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) made six saves en route to her sixth career shutout.
Conn seemed poised for a goal from the start, dominating the opening period with a 5-1 advantage in shots and a 4-1 edge in penalty corners.
Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) had a deflection that hit off the post just five minutes in, and later
Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) was denied on a breakout attempt by Colby goalie Leah Anderson.
The Camels continued with the offensive pressure in the second quarter and produced several more scoring opportunities. McGann had three shots in the stanza alone, including a full swing from the right side that once again was stopped by Anderson. With just over a minute left in the half,
Maddie Mason (Brentwood, N.H.) ripped a shot off a penalty corner that was also turned away.
Despite the 0-0 score at intermission, Conn had the better of play in the opening half. The Camels outshot the Mules 12-4 and earned twice as many penalty corners (8-4).
The goal that didn't come in the first half came early in the second, as the Camels were awarded a penalty stroke just 1:24 into the proceedings. Galanis stepped up to take the attempt and buried her shot stick side for the 1-0 advantage.
Winemaster and the defense protected the margin the rest of the way. Early in the fourth quarter, the Conn goalie stopped a pair of shots on one sequence—the first on the doorstep, and the second off the rebound—to keep the Mules off the scoreboard. Later, a green card gave Colby a player advantage for the final 40 seconds of the contest, but the Camels held strong and closed out the victory.
Conn finished the game with 17 penalty corners, its highest single game total since 2016. The Camels also ended with a 22-11 edge in total shots.
Conn (2-4 overall, 1-3 NESCAC) will next play at Middlebury College on Saturday, September 28 at 11:00 a.m.
