MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Connecticut College field hockey team dropped a 10-2 decision at No. 1 Middlebury College on Saturday afternoon in NESCAC action at Peter Kohn Field.
Middlebury remained unbeaten on the season, improving to 8-0 overall and 5-0 in league play. The top-ranked Panthers grabbed control with five goals in the opening quarter and never looked back. Georgianne Defeo led all scorers with three goals while Caroline Haggerty came off the bench to add a pair.
Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) accounted for both of Conn's goals, scoring once in the second quarter and another in the third. It marked her second multi-goal game of the season, and she leads the team in scoring with five goals on the year.
The Camels trailed 6-0 when McGann got them on the scoreboard with 8:41 remaining in the first half. Conn earned its first corner of the contest and promptly cashed in, as
Rowan Galanis (Ipswich, Mass.) found McGann in front of the cage for a backhanded finish.
In the second half, the deficit was 7-1 when McGann struck again. This time,
Frances Brisbane (Cohasset, Mass.) got things started with a long pass through the midfield on a restart. McGann took the feed on the run and immediately got past her defender, leaving just an open patch of green between her and the goalie. After dribbling into the circle, McGann wound up for a full swing that found the back of the cage for her second goal of the contest.
Conn goalie
Liz Winemaster (Lake Forest, Ill.) made nine saves in three quarters of work before turning things over to
Sadie Abuhaidar (Park City, Utah). The senior, making her first appearance in goal this season, finished with three stops.
Conn (2-5 overall, 1-4 NESCAC) will next host Springfield College on Wednesday, October 2 at 7:00 p.m.
