NEW LONDON, Conn. – On the heels of a tough setback the night prior, the Connecticut College women's volleyball team rebounded for a 3-0 victory over Bard College on Saturday afternoon in a non-conference tilt at Luce Field House.
The Camels never trailed in the first or third sets and won by scores of 25-12, 25-21 and 25-18.
Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) posted a match-high 11 kills on 23 swings, and
Katherine Randall (Chicago, Ill.) tacked on eight kills and a match-high 12 digs.
Mila Chan (San Francisco, Calif.) and
Evie Lockwood Mullaney (Needham, Mass.) chipped in seven kills apiece while
Josie Kelly (Solana Beach, Calif.) directed the offense and finished with 35 assists.
Conn jumped out to a 6-2 lead in the opening set thanks to a pair of kills from both Wartelle and Lockwood Mullaney. After a 6-1 spurt yielded a 14-6 advantage, the Camels strung together six straight points that included three kills by Chan to extend the margin to 20-8. On set point, Chan delivered her seventh kill of the frame to give the hosts the 1-0 lead.
Bard seemed in control of the second set, ripping off five consecutive points to take its largest lead at 18-12. However, the Camels roared back into the lead behind eight straight points on the serve of Randall. A quick-set kill by Kelly put Conn on top for good, and the hosts closed out the set on a kill by Lockwood Mullaney to go up 2-0 in the match.
An 8-1 start gave the Camels plenty of cushion in the third set. A total of 11 Conn players saw action in the stanza, but it was Randall who led the pack with five kills to help sew up the win.
Conn (8-4 overall, 0-3 NESCAC) will next host Mitchell College on Thursday, October 3 at 7:00 p.m.
