Women's Soccer Drops NESCAC Opener at #9 Amherst

AMHERST, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's soccer team opened up NESCAC play against #9 Amherst College, falling to the host Mammoths 2-0 on Saturday afternoon from Hitchcock field. With the loss, Conn falls to 1-0-1 overall and 0-0-1 in NESCAC play, while Amherst improves to 2-0-0 overall and 1-0-0 in conference action.

Amherst started on the front foot in the opening minutes, jumping out to an early 1-0 lead as Patience Kum and Carter Hollingsworth worked together to feed Abby Schwartz who found the back of the net at 13:48.

Conn started to get into the game, recording their first shot of the contest. The Camels were awarded a free kick near midfield and Alexa Weiner (Fairfield, Conn.) delivered the ball into the box, connecting with the head of Clare Mulvihill (West Caldwell, N.J.), but her effort went straight towards the keeper.

Late in the half, the Camels once again earned a free kick, and this time Weiner's effort ended up on target, but was collected by Mika Fisher, as Conn trailed 1-0 at the break.

The Mammoths opened up the second half like they did the first, putting pressure on the Camels back line, and forcing an early save from Ella Kahrl (Wellesley, Mass.). However, Amherst was able to double the lead in the 57th minute as Precious Novidrzo made it 2-0.

Down two goals, Conn looked to get back into the game, and generated three shots in the span of five minutes, but were unable to cut into the deficit, falling to Amherst 2-0.

Amherst outshot Conn 13-8 overall, but both sides recorded five shots on goal, while Amherst led the corner kick battle 8-0.

Kahrl got the start between the sticks and made three saves. Mulvihill led the Camels with four shots and two on target, while Weiner, Ella Gazo (Colchester, Vt.), and Mae Mastrullo (Hudson, Mass.) also added one shot on target.

Fisher recorded five saves in goal, while Novidrzo and Schwartz tallied a goal a piece, and three Mammoths adding one assist.

Conn returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 11 for a rivalry matchup as the Camels host the Coast Guard Academy at 4:00 p.m. on Freeman Field.
