WATERVILLE, Maine – The Connecticut College women's basketball team dropped a 67-46 decision in its NESCAC opener against Colby College on Friday night at the Margaret M. Crook Center.
Colby opened the game with nine straight points and never trailed. Kate Olenik led three Mules in double figures with a game-high 20 points on 5-for-10 shooting. Amelia Hanscom added 11 points and nine rebounds while Lydia Mordarski finished with 10 points. Valeria Santiago Dedos (Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) paced the Camels with nine points off the bench.
The Mules got off to a fast start thanks to Olenik, who netted 12 points in the opening quarter to stake the hosts to a 20-7 advantage after one. Colby then added to the margin in the second period as Ana Von Rumohr dropped in six points to help pad the lead to 35-16 at the break.
Santiago Dedos provided an offensive spark for the Camels after intermission, scoring all nine of her points in the second half. However, Conn couldn't make up any ground over the final 20 minutes, and the Mules coasted to the finish to improve to 5-7 overall (1-0 NESCAC).
The Camels shot 32 percent as a team and went 5-for-22 from beyond the arc.
Charlotte Head (Holden, Mass.) and
Catie Hurley (Walpole, Mass.) chipped in seven points apiece and combined for 11 rebounds. Head also added two steals and a pair of blocks on the night.
Conn (9-5 overall, 0-1 NESCAC) will next play at Bowdoin College on Saturday, January 11 at 3:00 p.m.
