Engle's Late Tally Secures 2-2 Tie for Women's Hockey Against Hamilton

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team skated to a 2-2 tie with visiting Hamilton, before winning the shootout 2-1 on Saturday afternoon from Dayton Arena. With the tie Conn moves to 6-9-1 overall and 2-7-1 in conference play, while Hamilton moves to 8-8-2 on the year and 3-5-2 in NESCAC play.

It was a slow opening 20 minutes as both teams struggled to get settled in. Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) had the first shot of the game for Conn at 4:33 but her effort was stopped by Teagan Brown. Hamilton answered with a shot by Sophia Rodham but Jillian Wexler (Plainsboro, N.J.) equaled her counterpart, as the game was scoreless after one.

The first half of the middle frame continued like the first period, before the Continentals opened the scoring. Ava Romano buried a shot on the back post to put Hamilton up 1-0 at 9:25. Five minutes later, Hamilton doubled their advantage as Sophia Testa's shot from the point squeaked through at 14:06. Conn answered right away, just 52 seconds later, Burm was able to keep a puck in along the wall, pushing it down to Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.). Sammons fed Caitlin Pierce (Edgewater, N.J.), firing it back to Sammons who one-timed it home to make it 2-1 heading to the third.

Hamilton suffocated Conn early in the third period, limiting any chance for the Camels to even the score. However, with just over five minutes remaining, Conn got a power play, and was able to generate some momentum. The Camels were unable to capitalize on the power play, and pulled Wexler with 2:28 to play. With 1:16 remaining, Conn evened the score. Pierce connected with Sammons who poked the puck to Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.), Engle was able to roof the shot over Brown to send the game to overtime.

Both teams had chances in the extra session to get the extra point, but both Brown and Wexler kept the game all square, sending it to the shootout. Abby Weiss opened the shootout, converting for the Continentals before Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) answered for Conn. Wexler came up with a save in the second round, as Pierce converted to put the Camels in front 2-1. Hamilton had to score to extend the shootout, but Wexler finished with one more stop, as Conn earned the 2-1 edge in the shootout.

Hamilton outshot Conn 24-20, while winning 33 of 56 draws.

Wexler got the start in goal, finishing with 22 saves. Sammons and Pierce both had two points on a goal and an assist and two assists respectively, while Engle added a goal, and Burm notched an assist. Harris led the way in the circle winning six draws, while Conn finished 3-3 on the penalty kill and 0-2 on the power play.

Brown got the nod in net, finishing with 18 saves. Six Continentals recorded one point, with Romano and Testa both tallying one goal, while Hamilton finished 0-3 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.

Conn continues their homestand on Friday evening, as the Camels host Wesleyan at 7:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
