Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Hockey Comes Up Short in Upset Bid of No. 11 Endicott

NEW LONDON, Conn.– The Connecticut College men's ice hockey team gave No. 11 Endicott all they could handle, but ultimately fell, 2-1 on Tuesday night from Dayton Arena. With the win, Conn falls to 6-4-1, while Endicott improves to 10-4.

The opening 15 minutes were a back-and-forth affair, as both Will McEvoy (Ottawa, Ontario) and Atticus Kelly were sharp in their respective nets. However, Endicott opened the scoring with just over four minutes remaining. After killing off a Conn power play, the Gulls got a counter attack, as John Goldowski put Endicott in front at 15:49. With just two seconds left in the frame, the Gulls doubled their advantage as Andrew Kurapov scored at the backdoor to put Endicott up 2-0 after one.

Much of the second period was like the opening frame, as both goalies kept the game as is. However, Conn finally got on the board at 16:37. With the Camels killing a penalty, Matt Lewis (Pembroke, Mass.) fed a breakout pass to spring Jack Luca (Milton, Mass.) on a breakaway. Luca waited out Kelly, slipping the puck into the back of the net, just as the penalty expired. Conn tried to tie it late in the period, but trailed 2-1 heading to the third.

The game tightened up in the final period, as neither side wanted to give an inch. After killing off a penalty midway through the frame, Conn got a golden opportunity to find the equalizer, as the Camels were awarded a power play with just over three minutes remaining. During the power play, Conn pulled McEvoy to make it a 6-on-4 advantage, but were unable to capitalize. Endicott drew a penalty in the final minute, and held on to defeat Conn 2-1.

Endicott held a slim 29-28 edge on shots on goal, while winning 39 of 71 draws.

McEvoy was strong in goal, finishing with 27 saves, including stopping the last 19 shots faced. Luca led the way with the lone goal, while Lewis picked up a helper. Quinn Kennedy paced the Camels with five shots on goal, while John Russo (South Windsor, Conn.) led the way in the face-off circle winning 15 draws, while Conn finished 5-5 on the penalty kill and 0-5 on the power play.

Kelly got the start in net, recording 27 saves. Five different Gulls tallied one point, with Goldowski and Kurapov both tallying one goal. Endicott finished 0-5 on the power play and 5-5 on the penalty kill.

Conn has the weekend off before traveling to Purchase, N.Y. to take on Manhattanville at 7:00 p.m. next Tuesday.
