Perugini's Early Tally Pushes Men's Soccer Past Hamilton 1-0

CLINTON, N.Y.– Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) scored early in the contest, and the Connecticut College men's soccer team shut down host Hamilton College, earning a 1-0 win on Saturday afternoon from Love Field.

Hamilton started quickly, recording three shots in the first six minutes, but Conn did well to block two of them. Just past the nine minute mark though, the Camels opened the scoring. Gavin Vanden Berg (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) was able to keep play alive along the end line, putting a ball toward the goal, where Perugini redirected it past Peter Montesano Scheibe to make it 1-0.

The Continentals replied with two good looks at goal, but TJ Krongard (Montclair, N.J.) turned both aside. Neither side was able to generate much offensively over the final 30 minutes, as the Camels remained in front 1-0 at the break.

Hamilton started the second half on the front foot, with two shots in the first four minutes, but again the Conn defense answered, blocking both efforts. Four minutes later, Perugini had a look for his second tally of the afternoon, but his shot was stopped by Montesano Scheibe.

The Continentals upped the pressure with three shots in just over two minutes, but two missed the target while Krongard came up with a save on the third. Conn's defense shut down Hamilton over the final 20 minutes, not allowing a shot, as the Camels came away with the 1-0 win.

Hamilton outshot Conn 15-7, holding a 4-2 edge on shots on goal and on corner kicks.

Krongard picked up the clean sheet in goal, finishing with four saves. Perugini led the Camels, recording the only goal, while Vanden Berg chipped in an assist.

Montesano Scheibe got the start in goal, making one save for the Continentals.

Conn (5-2-4, 2-2-3 NESCAC) returns home on Wednesday as the Camels host neighboring Coast Guard at 4:00 p.m. on Freeman Field.
