NEW LONDON, Conn. – Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajuela, Costa Rica) recorded four points and the Connecticut College men's soccer team defeated neighboring Coast Guard 3-0 on Tuesday afternoon from Freeman Field.
Conn started quickly, jumping out to a lead just nine minutes in. Quiros-Newton whipped a cross into the box, where Gavin Mpiana's (Cape Town, South Africa) flicked header snuck in at the far post to make it 1-0 Camels.
Conn continued to put pressure on the Coast Guard defense as Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) forced a save from Connor Hickey 10 minutes later. The Camels came close to doubling the advantage in the 32nd minute as Charlie Miles (Tarrytown, N.Y.) rifled a shot from 30-yards out that Hickey was able to keep out, as Conn led 1-0 at the break.
Neither side generated much in the opening 25 minutes of the second half. However, Conn finally found a second goal with just under 14 minutes remaining. Quiros-Newton played a lovely through ball down the wing to Maurice Pigola (Gorlitz, Germany) who calmly slotted the ball home to make it 2-0.
Just six minutes later the Camels extended the lead to three. Gavin Vanden Berg's (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) was flicked on by Mpiana, falling to Perugini, who laid it off to Quiros-Newton, who fired home to make it 3-0. Conn closed out the final eight minutes to earn the 3-0 victory.
Conn outshot Coast Guard 18-5, including 10-0 on shots on target while holding a 5-1 edge on corner kicks.
TJ Krongard (Montclair, N.J.) picked up the clean sheet victory, facing no shots on goal. Quiros-Newton led the way with one goal and two assists, with Mpiana adding a goal and an assist, Pigola notching a goal, and Perugini chipping in an assist.
Hickey got the start in goal for the Bears, finishing with seven saves.
Conn (6-2-4, 2-2-3 NESCAC) heads back out on the road as the Camels travel to Lewiston, Maine to take on Bates at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.
