Volleyball Stays Hot at Hamilton

CLINTON, N.Y. — The Connecticut College women's volleyball team picked up its second NESCAC win of the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon at Margaret Bundy Scott Field House.

The Camels, who went 3-0 for the week with wins over Amherst College and Coast Guard Academy, dropped the opening set. However, Conn rebounded to take the next three, winning by final scores of 21-25, 25-18, 25-22 and 25-22.

Grace Anderson (Pawling, N.Y.) and Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) carried the offensive load with 19 kills apiece, a career high for the former and a season high for the latter. Aubrie Letourneau (Mattapoisett, Mass.) supplied 47 assists while Taylor Merrifield (Honolulu, Hawaii) posted a match-high 14 digs.

With the score tied at 20-20 in the opening set, the Continentals closed with a 5-1 run to take a 1-0 lead in the match. The second set played out in a similar fashion, only with the Camels snapping a 13-13 deadlock with a 5-1 spurt and slamming the door with a 4-0 burst. Wartelle provided a pair of kills down the stretch while Riley Lord (Exeter, N.H.) added a service ace.

Anderson fueled the Camels with seven kills in the third set, five of which came during a key 10-1 run that yielded an 18-11 advantage. Hamilton eventually pulled within one at 23-22, only to lose the next two points thanks to another Anderson kill and a block by Anderson and Wartelle.

The duo each added six kills in the fourth set to bring the Camels home. Trailing by one, Conn ripped off six straight points to make it 24-19, and Anderson later hammered down the final point to wrap up the match.

Both Anderson and Vibha Sheth (Austin, Texas) recorded four block assists while Lord notched three aces. The Camels finished with a 58-41 edge in total kills on the day.

With the win, the Camels moved into seventh place in the conference standings with two league games remaining on the schedule. The top eight schools will qualify for the NESCAC Championship.

Conn (11-8 overall, 3-5 NESCAC) will next play at Emerson College on Saturday, October 25 at 1:00 p.m.
