Field Hockey Overpowers Johnson & Wales

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College field hockey team closed out the non-conference portion of its schedule with a 5-1 victory over Johnson & Wales University on Wednesday afternoon at Silfen Field.

The Camels overpowered the Wildcats from the start, finishing with a 29-5 advantage in total shots and an 18-5 edge in penalty corners. Katie Dolan (Westminster, Mass.) paced the offense with a pair of goals while Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.), Margaret Sadak (Glastonbury, Conn.) and Sadie Gearan (Lynnfield, Mass.) also added markers.

After yielding a pair of corners early in the contest, Conn quickly settled in and kept the ball locked in its offensive half for the rest of the opening quarter. The Camels converted on a penalty corner of their own for the first goal of the day with 5:31 left in the period. After the insert, a ball driven to the cage was tipped by a diving Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) and saved by JWU goalie Sophia Brea. However, McGann knocked in the rebound for her team-leading ninth goal of the season.

The hosts added another goal before the end of the first, as a deflection off a JWU defender's stick ended up five yards in front of the cage for Dolan. She beat the goalie to the ball and swept her shot inside the far post to make it a 2-0 game.

Conn's third goal came with just over three minutes remaining in the half. McGann set up the score with some fancy stick work, spinning past a group of defenders to the top of the crease and flipping a pass to Dolan at the far post. Dolan swatted the ball out of midair for her fifth goal of the season and the first multi-goal game of her career.

The Camels led 3-0 at halftime and tacked on goals in each quarter of the second half. Sadak scored in the final seconds of the third, finishing off a feed from Bonner for her third goal of the year. Gearan's tally—the first of her collegiate career—came with 2:50 left in the fourth, converting off a pass from Megan Pons (Charlotte, N.C.) on another successful penalty corner.

Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) didn't see a lot of action in goal, finishing with two saves as her defense kept the Wildcats at bay. Brea recorded 10 stops for JWU (8-6 overall) while Emily Downing supplied the lone goal in the fourth quarter.

The Camels ran the table on their non-league slate in 2025, posting a 5-0 record and outscoring opponents to the tune of 20-6.

Conn (6-7 overall) will next host No. 18 Williams College on Saturday, October 25 at 1:00 p.m.
