NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Connecticut College women's volleyball team dropped a 3-0 decision to Bowdoin College on Friday night in a NESCAC showdown at Luce Field House.
The Polar Bears (13-9 overall, 5-4 NESCAC) recorded 12 service aces and 14 total blocks en route to set scores of 25-15, 25-19 and 25-10. Alison Smith led all players with nine kills while Skye LaMendola and Zoe Ryu added seven apiece.
Grace Anderson (Pawling, N.Y.) and
Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) paced the Camels with seven kills each.
Aubrie Letourneau (Mattapoisett, Mass.) finished with 16 assists while
Taylor Merrifield (Honolulu, Hawaii) recorded a match-high 10 digs.
Ryu served Bowdoin to a 5-0 lead in the opening set as the visitors got off to a hot start and didn't cool down. LaMendola supplied five kills in the frame as the Polar Bears quickly grabbed a 1-0 advantage in the match.
An 11-3 start to the second set put Bowdoin in control once again, as Smith and Ryu combined for seven of the visitors' 10 kills in the frame. The Polar Bears also batted down six blocks to keep Conn's offense off balance.
Conn took its first lead of the night at 4-3 in the third following a kill by Wartelle, but Bowdoin pulled even on the ensuing rally and never trailed again. The Polar Bears peppered the Camels with six aces over the final set, and the final kill by LaMendola secured the 3-0 sweep.
Conn (12-9 overall, 3-6 NESCAC) will close out the regular season at home against No. 8 Colby College on Saturday, November 1 at 2:00 p.m.
