Volleyball Drops Regular Season Finale to No. 8 Colby

NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Connecticut College women's volleyball team lost a 3-1 decision against No. 8 Colby College on Saturday afternoon in its regular season finale at Luce Field House.

The Mules (21-2 overall, 9-1 NESCAC) rebounded from a slow start to win by set scores of 15-25, 25-22, 25-15 and 25-11. Brady Moseley paved the way with 12 kills while Hayley Beigh added 10.

Rae Wartelle (Tacoma, Wash.) recorded a match-high 14 kills to lead the Camels. Grace Anderson (Pawling, N.Y.) chipped in 10 kills while Riley Lord (Exeter, N.H.) added nine, and Aubrie Letourneau (Mattapoisett, Mass.) orchestrated the offense with 39 assists.

The Camels played like they were shot out of a cannon in the opening set, finishing with 17 kills on 27 swings to grab an early 1-0 advantage. Wartelle supplied six kills and a service ace in the stanza while Lord tacked on five kills and an ace.

Colby shortened its bench for the second set, and the move paid immediate dividends. The Mules took control behind a 7-1 spurt that yielded a 16-12 lead, and although Conn cut the deficit to two on four separate occasions, the visitors held on down the stretch to even the match at 1-1.

The Mules never trailed in the final two sets as Moseley and Beigh combined for 15 kills. A 7-0 run was the difference in the third set, giving the visitors an 11-2 buffer right out of the gate. In the fourth, Colby ripped off eight straight points en route to an 11-3 advantage.

Taylor Merrifield (Honolulu, Hawaii) turned in a strong defensive effort for the Camels, finishing with a match-high 23 digs. Vibha Sheth (Austin, Texas) added a solo block and three block assists at the net.

Prior to the match, the Camels honored Lord and fellow senior Zoe Watts in a special ceremony. Watts finished with four kills and three block assists in her final home game.

Conn (12-10 overall, 3-7 NESCAC) has qualified as the seventh seed for the upcoming NESCAC Championship, which begins with quarterfinal action on Saturday, November 8. The Camels will travel to second-seeded Colby for a rematch that begins at 3:00 p.m.
