NEW LONDON, Conn. – Will McEvoy (Ottawa, Ontario) made 37 saves and Matt Lewis (Pembroke, Mass.) scored twice in the third period as the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team came back to defeat No. 14 Trinity 4-2 in the season opener on Friday night from Dayton Arena.
Trinity controlled the opening period, outshooting Conn 12-3 in the frame. McEvoy was active in the early going making five saves in the opening four minutes. Lewis got Conn's first shot of the game at 5:33, but midway through the period, Trinity earned a power play. The Bantams took advantage of the extra skater as Ryan Panico made it 1-0 at 9:45. McEvoy held Trinity at bay for the rest of the period, as the Camels trailed 1-0.
The Bantams doubled the advantage just five minutes into the second period, as Blake Cotton batted home a rebound to make it 2-0. However, Conn got an opportunity to cut into the deficit just three and a half minutes later, earning a power play. Some crisp passing between Will Lawrence (Bethesda, Md.) and Steve Ardagna (Roswell, Ga.) led to Jack Houser (Arlington, Mass.) sneaking down to the back post and redirecting a pass home to make it 2-1. Just a minute later, the Camels evened the score. Lewis won a face-off to the right of Trinity goalie Devon Bobak, where Lawrence corralled the puck, firing past Bobak to make it 2-2. Neither side could take control over the rest of the period as the game remained tied at 2 heading to the third.
The teams traded chances over the opening 10 minutes of the final frame, but neither side was able to jump in front. However, just past the midway point of the period, Conn took the lead. Reid Shafer (Coppell, Texas) and Shafer played catch behind the Camels net, before springing Lewis. Lewis made a nifty move around a Bantam defender before firing past Bobak to make it 3-2.
Six minutes later, Conn got the important insurance marker. Lawrence chipped the puck out of the defensive zone to Lewis, who skated in towards Bobak. Lewis laid off a pass to Quinn Kennedy (Silver Springs, Md.), giving it right back to Lewis who fired home to make it 4-2. Conn closed out the final minutes as Trinity was assessed a five minute penalty, to come away with the 4-2 victory.
Trinity outshot Conn 39-16, while both teams won 35 face-offs.
McEvoy opened the year with a strong performance in net, finishing with 37 saves. Lewis and Lawrence paced the Camels with three points each on two goals and one assist, and one goal and two assists respectively.
