NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's soccer team scored five goals in the second half to defeat the University of Saint Joseph 6-0 on Saturday in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament from Freeman Field.
Conn dominated the opening half as Max Haberman (San Diego, Calif.) and Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) each forced a save from Will Slayton. Haberman forced another save, before USJ nearly opened the scoring with nine minutes remaining.
Emmanuel Ofori headed a shot that nearly got across the line, but Charlie Riegel (Suffield, Conn.) cleared it to keep it scoreless. However, with just seconds remaining Riegel crossed a ball that fell to Kevin Hwong (San Mateo, Calif.) who fired home from outside the box to make it 1-0 heading to the half.
Conn doubled the lead just five minutes into the second half. Gavin Vanden Berg (Lake Forest Park, Wash.) was taken down in the box, with the ball landing at the feet of Haberman who fired home to make it 2-0. 10 minutes later, Haberman found the back of the net again to make it 3-0.
Conn added two more goals in the 71st minute to extend the lead to 5-0. Elliot Spatz (Bellevue, Wash.) finished off a nice passing play between Anish Reid (Middletown, Conn.) and Max Weiss (Weston, Conn.), before Max Lee (London, England) and Spatz set up Chase Corcoran for his first career goal. Shinya Frank (Menlo Park, Calif.) scored his first career goal, off assists from Henry Lester (Southwest Harbor, Maine) and Cameron Merrill (New Gloucester, Maine) to give Conn the 6-0 win.
Conn outshot USJ 39-7, including 16-4 on shots on goal, while holding an 11-2 on corner kicks.
TJ Krongard (Montclair, N.J.) got the start in goal making one save in 66 minutes of action, while Connor Smith (Columbia, S.C.) closed out the game making two saves. Haberman paced the Camels with two goals, while Spatz chipped in a goal and an assist. Corcoran, Frank, and Hwong all recorded their first career goals, while Lee, Merrill, Reid, Weiss, and Vanden Berg added one assist.
Will Slayton got the start in goal, finishing with nine saves for the Blue Jays.
Conn (11-3-5, 4-2-4 NESCAC) continues NCAA Tournament action tomorrow afternoon against Babson at 1:00 p.m. on Freeman Field.
