WBB Comes Up Short in Home Opener vs. RWU

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team dropped a 60-49 decision to Roger Williams University on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at Luce Field House.

Sophia Coppola turned in a strong effort for the Hawks (2-1 overall), finishing with a game-high 26 points in 28 minutes while adding five blocks, four rebounds and two assists. Chelsea Graiver added nine points while Lilli Clark pulled down nine rebounds.

Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) and Valeria Santiago Dedos (Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) paced the Camels with 13 points apiece. Sydney Marshall (Enfield, Conn.) and Hayley Thompson (Maynard, Mass.) led the charge on the glass with nine boards each.

After cashing in on 13 three-pointers in the season opener on Friday, the Camels shot just 6-for-24 from deep against the Hawks. Roger Williams also outscored Conn 23-7 at the free throw line and benefited from 20 more attempts.

The opening quarter was tight throughout as the lead changed hands six times before the Hawks pulled ahead for good on a three by Coppola. The Camels did the brunt of their damage from deep—four threes in total, including two from Santiago Dedos—but that production didn't carry over into the rest of the contest.

Coppola took over in the second quarter, scoring 12 of her team's 14 points as the Hawks stretched the lead to 30-25 by intermission. Her 19 first-half points led all scorers at the break.

Roger Williams limited Conn to just eight points on 3-for-14 shooting in the third quarter. The Hawks led 47-33 heading into the final stanza, and a bucket by Maia Riccio in the opening minute of the fourth yielded a 16-point lead.

The Camels cut into the deficit with solid defense, scoring 12 straight points while holding the Hawks scoreless over a six-minute stretch. Tavarez was the spark, accounting for nine straight points during the spurt. Her spinning layup with 4:06 to go brought Conn to within four at 49-45.

On RWU's next possession, Graiver finally ended the drought with a dagger three from the wing. The Hawks then went 8-for-10 from the line in the final minute to seal the victory.

Conn (1-1 overall) will next play at WPI on Tuesday, November 18 at 5:30 p.m.
