WORCESTER, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team fell by 61-51 final at WPI on Tuesday night in a non-conference battle at Harrington Auditorium.
Emmy Allyn tallied 10 of her game-high 14 points in the fourth quarter and Ava Hyams grabbed 14 rebounds to pace the Engineers (2-2 overall). Conn's
Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) led all players with 27 points.
Tavarez scored in double figures in both halves and shot 10-for-17 from the field.
Sydney Marshall (Enfield, Conn.) finished a point shy of a double with nine points and 13 rebounds while
Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Catherine Cole (Lebanon, N.H.) both totaled seven points.
The Engineers raced out to a 7-0 lead over the opening five minutes of the first quarter, with Ava Giansiracusa bookending the run with a pair of free throws and a conventional three-point play. Conn, which trailed 13-10 after the slow start, fell behind 29-18 with 3:12 left in the half before rallying back. The Camels rattled off the final 10 points of the stanza, getting seven straight points from Xerras and a bucket by Tavarez to close the deficit to 30-29 at the break.
The third quarter was played entirely within a seven-point window, with the Camels taking their only lead of the night early on a layup by Tavarez. The Engineers later broke a 40-40 deadlock with a pair of Giansiracusa free throws with 23 seconds left in the frame.
In the fourth, WPI registered 15 of the quarter's first 18 points to seize control. The Engineers shot 57 percent from the floor over the final 10 minutes while holding the Camels to 0-for-4 shooting from downtown.
Conn (1-2 overall) will next play St. Lawrence University in the opening round of the Hampton Inn Holiday Classic on Friday, November 21 at Western New England University. Tip-off is slated for 8:00 p.m.
