NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team fought back from a 13-point second-half deficit to take down Brandeis University by an 84-78 final on Saturday afternoon at Luce Field House.
The Camels outscored the Judges 31-12 over the final 8:03 and shot 10-for-12 during the stretch, including a perfect 8-for-8 from three-point range.
Greg Cantwell (Glen Head, N.Y.) scored 10 of his team-high 24 points during the comeback as Conn remained unbeaten on the season.
Three other Camels also scored in double digits on the day.
James LaFrance (Guilford, Conn.) finished with 23 points, six rebounds and four steals to help the cause, and
Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J.) and
PJ Johnson Jr. (Marietta, Ga.) added 12 and 11 points, respectively.
Elias Rodl led four Judges in double figures with a game-high 27 points on 11-for-16 shooting. He also handed out seven assists, playing a part in 18 of Brandeis' 29 field goals in the contest.
Both teams led by as many as five in the opening half, though it was Brandeis that took a 37-34 advantage into the locker room at intermission. Rodl netted 12 points in the stanza to lead all scorers at the break.
In the second half, the Judges used a 13-4 run to build the margin to 54-42 by the 13-minute mark. Conn responded with seven straight points to keep within striking distance, a sequence that included a three from Cantwell and a baseline drive and jam by LaFrance.
Brandeis padded the lead over the next several minutes, as Rodl twice found Ali kaan Bek for open threes. The Judges then got a layup from Ryan Weiss and a pair of free throws from Alex Zakheim to go up 66-53 with 8:18 to go.
The Brandeis lead vanished in the blink of an eye, as the Camels connected from deep on four straight possessions to make it a one-point game with 6:04 to play. Back-to-back treys from Espinosa got things rolling, and Johnson and LaFrance added triples to bring Conn back into the fray.
A layup by Rodl bumped the Brandeis advantage back to three but did little to quell Conn's momentum. A three by LaFrance gave the Camels the lead for good at 70-68, and he followed that up with a deep triple to bring the crowd to its feet.
Cantwell added a pair of threes inside the final 3:10 as the Camels took their biggest lead at 82-73. He later tacked on two late free throws to ice the game down the stretch.
Conn shot a season-high 17-for-34 from beyond the arc. Cantwell led the aerial assault with six threes while LaFrance added four and Espinosa and Johnson chipped in three apiece.
Conn (3-0 overall) will next play at Eastern Connecticut State University on Tuesday, November 25 at 7:00 p.m.
