MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Connecticut College men's hockey team closed out a weekend road trip, falling to host Middlebury 5-2 on Saturday from Chip Kenyon Arena.
Middlebury started quickly, opening the scoring just four minutes in off a goal from Landon Brownlee. Conn responded over the next six minutes, earning a power play, but the Camels were unable to capitalize with the man-advantage. Both teams generated chances down the stretch, but the Panthers remained in front 1-0 after one.
Middlebury used another early goal in the second period, to extend the lead at 4:13, as Revy Mack converted off assists from Jack Silverman and Tyler Wishart. Conn pushed looking to cut into the deficit, but the Camels were denied by Andrew Heinze. The Panthers added a goal with 31 seconds remaining from Bobby May as Middlebury led 3-0 heading to the third.
The early goals continued for Middlebury, as the Panthers pushed the lead to 5-0 by 4:34. Reece Brednich made it 4-0, before a goal from Dante Palombo made it five. Conn continued to attack looking to get on the board, and eventually did at 11:37. Will Lawrence (Bethesda, Md.) found the back of the while short-handed to make it 5-1. With time winding down, Conn got another goal back as Arty Mirante (Garden City, N.Y.) scored his first career goal at 18:16. However, that was as close as the Camels got, falling 5-2.
Middlebury outshot Conn 43-33, while Conn held a slim 32-31 edge on face-off wins.
Kellen Beauton (Colchester, Conn.) got the start in goal, making eight saves in just over 10 minutes of action, before being replaced by Will McEvoy (Ottawa, Ontario) who made 30 saves the rest of the way. Lawrence and Mirante paced the Camels with a goal apiece, while Shane Zarcone led the way with 12 face-off wins. Conn finished 4-4 on the penalty kill and 0-5 on the power play.
Heinze got the win in net, recording 31 saves. Wishart and Jake Stevens led Middlebury with two assists each, while Brownlee added a goal and an assist and seven other Panthers recorded one point. Midd finished 0-4 on the power play and 5-5 on the penalty kill.
Conn (1-3, 1-3 NESCAC) returns home on Tuesday as the Camels host Johnson and Wales at 5:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena.
