Men's Hockey Explodes for Seven Goals in Rout of JWU

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's hockey team scored four goals in 4:29 to pull away and defeat visiting Johnson and Wales 7-2 on Tuesday night from Dayton Arena.

Conn started quickly opening the scoring just 3:49 into the contest. Jack Houser (Arlington, Mass.) had his shot stopped, but the rebound fell to Logan Cleary (Mentor, Ohio) who fired home to make it 1-0. The game settled down, before JWU found the tying goal, off a tally from Connor Nelson at 12:53. Neither side took advantage of chances down the stretch as the game was tied at one, after one.

The teams traded chances through the opening half of the second period but the game remained even. However, the Wildcats earned a power play just past the nine minute mark and took advantage when Cam Martin put JWU in front. Conn battled back and just four minutes later tied it back up. Pete Stanger (Bathurst, New Brunswick) picked up a loose puck along the boards, firing across to Jimmy Lyver (North Grafton, Mass.) who made it 2-2. The tie was short-lived as just seconds later the Camels earned a power play. On the man advantage, Rocco Testa-Basi (Ottawa, Ontario) made an outlet pass up to Houser who fired over the glove of Jake Inzirillo to make it 3-2 heading to the third.

With the Camels leading by one in the final period, the Camels took over with four quick fire goals. Houser converted again on the power play, as Testa-Basi and Quinn Kennedy (Silver Spring, Md.) picked up the assists, before Arty Mirante (Garden City, N.Y.) finished off a pass from Wade Volo (North Conway, N.H.) while short-handed to make it 5-2 at 7:35. Just over a minute later, Ryan McKenna (Garden City, N.Y.) found Kennedy, who fired a pass to Kareem Alazem (McLean, Va.) who rifled a shot home to make it 6-2. Reece Cordray (Verona, Wis.) finished off the scoring at 10:32 as Lyver and Reid Shafer (Coppell, Texas) picked up the assists as Conn came away with the 7-2 win.

Conn outshot JWU 39-30, while the Wildcats won 38 of  69 face-offs.

Will McEvoy (Ottawa, Ontario) picked up the win in goal, finishing with 28 saves. Houser and Testa-Basi paced the Camels with three points each on two goals and one assist and three assists respectively. Lyver and Kennedy each added two points, while eight other Camels tallied one point. Conrad Moline (Stoughton, Wis.) led the way in the circle winning 10 face-offs, while Conn went 2-5 on the power play and 4-5 on the penalty kill, adding a short-handed goal.

Inzirillo got the start in net, giving up seven goals before being replaced by Brendan Flanagan. Five different Wildcats recorded one point, as JWU went 1-5 on the power play and 3-5 on the penalty kill.

Conn (2-3, 1-3 NESCAC) heads back on the road on Sunday, as the Camels travel to Newport, R.I. to take on Salve Regina at 3:00 p.m.
