Game Recap: Men's Ice Hockey |

Men's Hockey Downs Salve 4-2, Hands Seahawks First Loss

NEWPORT, R.I. – Ryan McKenna (Garden City, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal midway through the third period, as the Connecticut College men's ice hockey team defeated host Salve Regina 4-2 on Sunday afternoon from Howard Rink.

Conn started fast, jumping out to a lead just 4:29 into the contest. Will Lawrence (Bethesda, Md.) tallied the opening goal, as William Tripp (Lakeville, Mass.) and Shane Zarcone (Huntington, N.Y.) picked up the assists. The Camels had a chance to double the lead midway through the period after earning a power play, but Selby Warren stopped all three shots Conn generated on the man-advantage. However, Walter Baumann got Salve on the board late in the period as the game was tied at one, after one.

Conn earned an early power play in the second period, but the Seahawks had the best chance during the advantage, as Kellen Beauton (Colchester, Conn.) came up with a save on Aidan Elkins. Salve took the lead though at 8:14 as Jack Arizo put the Seahawks in front for the first time. The Camels battled back, capitalizing on a power play at 13:52. McKenna and Zarcone hooked up before finding Pete Stanger (Bathurst, New Brunswick) who fired home to send the game to the third period tied at two.

Both teams looked for the go-ahead goal through the first half of the final period, but both Beauton and Warren kept the game square. However, Conn jumped back in front at 11:29 as Michael Stenberg (Needham, Mass.) connected with McKenna who fired home to make it 3-2. The Seahawks pushed looking for another equalizer, pulling Warren for the extra attacker at 18:15. Just 20 seconds later though, Logan Cleary (Mentor, Ohio) found Jack Houser (Arlington, Mass.) who potted an empty-netter to seal the 4-2 win for Conn.

Conn outshot Salve 35-33, while Seahawks held a 43-25 advantage on face-off wins.

Beauton picked up his first win of the season, finishing with 31 saves. McKenna and Zarcone paced the Camels with two points each, while Houser, Lawrence, and Stanger all added one goal, and Cleary, Stenberg, and Tripp chipped in one assist. Conn finished 2-2 on the penalty kill and 1-4 on the power play.

Inzirillo got the start in net, recording 31 saves. Arizo and Baumann both recorded a goal to lead the Seahawks offensively. Salve finished 0-2 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill.

Conn (3-3, 1-3 NESCAC) returns home to take on Bowdoin at 7:00 p.m. on Friday night in Dayton Arena.
