NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team returned to the win column, defeating visiting Arcadia University 3-1 on Saturday evening from Dayton Arena.
It was a slow first period as both teams returned to action following a short lay-off for Thanksgiving, but it was Arcadia that recorded the first five shots of the game, but Jillian Wexler (Plainsboro, N.J.) came up with the saves. Conn responded with two quick shots, but Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) and Olivia Fagan (White Plains, N.Y.) were denied. The Camels opened the scoring just as a power play ended at 14:17 as Fagan tipped home a point shot from Emma Peterson (Westwood, Mass.) to put Conn in front 1-0 after one.
Conn took control in the first half of the second period, as the Camels were aided by three early power plays. However, Conn was unable to convert on the first two chances, before finally connecting with the woman-advantage midway through the period to make it 2-0. Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) connected with Lily Stern (Nove Zamky, Slovakia) at the point, Stern fired towards goal where Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) tipped it home. The Camels closed out the rest of the period to lead 2-0 heading to the third.
Conn continued their strong play to open the final period, extending the lead at just 3:38. Burm found Seiple, firing across the net to Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) who fired home to make it 3-0. Conn looked poised to close out the game, and keep the shutout, however with just 2:33 remaining, Arcadia spoiled the clean sheet. Carys Jelley scored on the breakaway to make it 3-1, but the Camels closed out the final minutes to earn the 3-1 win.
Conn outshot Arcadia 33-18, while winning 39 of 61 face-offs.
Wexler made her first start of the year, picking up the win with 17 saves. Burm and Seiple led the way with two points, while five other Camels tallied one point, including Fagan who tallied her first career goal. Seiple led the way with 17 face-off wins, as Conn went 5-5 on the penalty kill and 1-8 on the power play.
Grace Meger got the start in net, recording 30 saves. Jelley tallied the lone goal for the Knights, as Arcadia went 0-5 on the power play and 7-8 on the penalty kill.
