Women's Hockey Downs Arcadia in Shootout

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team tied visiting Arcadia University 1-1, before downing the Knights 2-1 in the shootout on Sunday afternoon from Dayton Arena.

Conn started quickly as both Emma Peterson (Westwood, N.J.) and Christine Oar (Scituate, Mass.) forced early saves from Kaylee Miller. Erika Roepke responded with Arcadia's first shot, but Alex Erdman (Lutherville, Md.) came up with the save. The teams traded chances for the rest of the period, but the game remained scoreless after one.

The Camels came out flying to start the second period, recording five shots in the first 1:18, but Miller kept Conn at bay. The Knights answered back with the next eight shots, but Erdman stood tall in the Camels net. Conn finally broke through though at 8:48. Ashley Engle (Ringwood, N.J.) put a shot off the side of the net that was picked up by Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.), McGann then found Engle in front of the net, who fired home to put the Camels in front 1-0 heading to the third.

The teams traded chances to open the final period, before Arcadia earned a power play around the seven minute mark. The Knights were able to put three shots on goal with the extra skater, but Erdman kept the door shut. However, with just under six and a half minutes remaining, Arcadia found the tying goal. Chloe Makinson had her initial shot stopped by Erdman, but she was able to follow up, poking home the rebound to make it 1-1. Neither side was able to convert down the stretch as the game headed to overtime.

In the extra session, both sides were able to generate a couple of chances, but both Erdman and Miller held strong, sending the game to the shootout. Arcadia converted on their first opportunity, before Erdman responded with two saves. On the other side, Lily Stern (Nove Zamky, Slovakia) hit the post with the Camels first shot, before Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) and Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) both converted to give the Camels the shootout win.

Conn outshot Arcadia 32-30, while winning 38 of 59 face-offs.

Erdman made her first start of the year, finishing with 29 saves. Engle tallied the lone Camel goal, while McGann and Sofia Polizzi (Brooklyn, N.Y.) picked up assists. Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) led the way with 15 face-off wins, as Conn went 4-4 on the penalty kill and 0-3 on the power play.

Miller got the nod in net, recording 31 saves. Makinson tallied the lone goal for Arcadia, as the Knights went 0-4 on the power play and 3-3 on the penalty kill.

Conn (3-1-2, 2-1-1 NESCAC) closes out play in 2025 on Friday night as the Camels travel to Worcester, Mass. to take on Worcester State at 7:30 p.m.
