Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Late Goal Sinks Men's Soccer 1-0 in NESCAC Title Game

MEDFORD, Mass. – Top seed Tufts University scored with nine minutes remaining as the fifth-seeded Connecticut College men's soccer team fell 1-0 on Sunday in the NESCAC Championship game from Bello Field.

The first half was cagey as neither side was able to generate much offensively. Tufts had an early effort from Xavier Canfin that resulted in an easy save from TJ Krongard (Montclair, N.J.). Conn answered with the next two chances but Max Haberman (San Diego, Calif.) was blocked and Matt Quiros-Newton (Alajuela, Costa Rica) put his effort wide.

The Jumbos came closest to scoring in the opening half, as Henry Brown's header struck the woodwork, keeping the game scoreless. Marco Perugini (Medway, Mass.) had a late look for the Camels but his shot went high as the game was even at the break.

Tufts had a chance just a minute into the second half, but Ben Brown fired his shot high. Conn responded just a minute and a half later as Sam Brockelman (Topsfield, Mass.) forced a save from Nikola Antic. The Camels continued their strong stretch as Brockelman and Perugini both were denied by Antic.

With time running down both sides upped the pressure looking for the icebreaker. With just under nine minutes remaining, Tufts got a flukey bounce off a Camels pass to go in front 1-0. Conn came straight down off the kickoff as Perugini fired a shot on goal, but Antic made the save.

With time winding down, the Camels continued pressing looking for the tying goal. Dylan Hoke's (Westport, Conn.) long range effort went wide, before Perugini's shot with two and a half minutes remaining getting blocked. Conn had a last-ditch effort earning a free-kick with 30 seconds remaining, but the loose ball in the box was corralled by Antic, as Tufts held on for the 1-0 victory.

Conn outshot Tufts 15-6, holding a 4-3 edge on shots on goal, and a 6-4 advantage on corner kicks.

Krongard got the start in goal, finishing with two saves. Brockelman and Perugini paced the Camels attack, as both recorded two shots on goal.

Antic got the win in goal, making four saves, as Canfin got credit for the lone goal in the match.

Conn (10-3-5, 4-2-4 NESCAC) who entered the day ranked fifth in the NCAA Power Index will find out tomorrow their draw for the NCAA Tournament with the Selection Show at 11:30 a.m. on NCAA.com.
