Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

McGann's Third Period Tally Propels Women's Hockey to 4-2 Win Over Wesleyan

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Bridget McGann scored the game-winning goal with just over five minutes remaining as the Connecticut College women's ice hockey team picked up the weekend sweep over Wesleyan with a 4-2 win on Saturday afternoon from Dayton Arena. With the win Conn improves to 8-9-1 overall and 4-7-1 in conference play, while Wesleyan falls to 7-13 on the year and 2-10 in conference action.

Wesleyan started quickly with two shots in the opening 30 seconds, but Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) answered the early test. Just past the eight minute mark, Conn earned a power play and capitalized. Alana Burm (Higham, Mass.) had her initial shot stopped, but was able to chip the rebound over Jenna Guglielmi, as Caitlin Pierce (Edgewater, N.J.) and Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) picked up the assists at 9:11. Both sides had a couple of chances down the stretch, but Conn remained in front 1-0 after one.

Five minutes into the second period, the Camels were awarded another power play, but Wesleyan converted short handed. Cameron Devenney passed across to Ainsley Lonczak who evened the score at 6:05. At 13:11 the Cardinals took their first lead of the afternoon. Sam Galanek won a face-off to Isabelle Allieri who snuck a shot inside the post to give Wesleyan the 2-1 edge heading to the third.

Conn evened the score just 1:49 into the final period on a marker from Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.). Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) was able to push the puck up to Engle who went in down the wing, before firing over the glove of Guglielmi to make it 2-2. With the game looking like it was destined for overtime, McGann played the hero. Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) took a shot from the point that ended up behind Guglielmi where McGann was able to dive and poke the puck home to put the Camels in front. Wesleyan pulled the goalie for the extra skater in the final minute, but Kylie McCarthy (Dedham, Mass.) blocked a shot, before picking up the loose puck and slotting it into the empty net to give Conn the 4-2 win.

Wesleyan outshot Conn 32-29, while winning 26 of 47 face-offs.

Galizio picked up the win in goal, finishing with 20 saves. Four Camels tallied a goal, as Burm, Engle, McCarthy, and McGann all found the back of the net, while Bonner, Chesner, Pierce, and Sammons all added one assist. Charlotte Harris (Ystrad Mynach, Wales) led the way in the circle with 13 wins, while Conn finished 4-4 on the penalty kill and 1-4 on the power play.

Guglielmi got the start in goal, recording 36 saves. Allieri and Lonczak both recorded one goal, while two other Cardinals picked up one assist each. Wesleyan finished 0-4 on the power play and 3-4 on the penalty kill.

Conn heads back out on the road for the final time, heading to Williamstown, Mass. to open up a crucial NESCAC series on Friday night at 7:00 p.m.
