Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's Hockey Falls 2-1 to No. 14 Bowdoin in NESCAC Finale

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team came up short, falling to No. 14 Bowdoin 2-1 on Saturday from Dayton Arena. With the loss Conn falls to 10-11-1 overall and 6-9-1 in conference play, while Bowdoin improves to 14-7-1 on the year and 8-6-0 in NESCAC play.

Conn opened the contest with the first shot of the game just 20 seconds in, but Charlotte Harris (Ystrad Mynach, Wales) was stopped by Sally Solotaroff Webber. Bowdoin responded with their first two shots six and a half minutes in, but Devon Galizio came up with the stops. The Polar Bears opened the scoring with just over nine minutes remaining, as Jane McCarter's point shot snuck its way in to give Bowdoin the 1-0 lead after one.

The Camels had a good look at tying the game early in the middle frame, but Jess Pistorino's (Charlestown, Mass.) shot went just wide at 1:11. Conn then earned a power play at the five minute mark, but the Camels were thwarted by Solotaroff-Webber. Bowdoin answered with offensive zone time throughout the middle of the period, but Conn held strong, heading the third period trailing 1-0.

Conn upped the pressure early in the third period, looking to even the score. Just under eight minutes into the period, Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.), Olivia Montembeault (Glencoe, Ill.), and Pistorino put shots on goal in quick succession, but were turned aside by Solotaroff-Webber. However, with just over 10 minutes remaining Conn evened the score. Alana Burm (Hingham, Mass.) bounced a pass off the boards to Sofia Donnelly (Ringwood, N.J.) at the point; Donnelly fired on goal, where Claire Sammons (Naperville, Ill.) tipped the puck through Solotaroff-Webber to make it 1-1.

Both teams traded chances over the next couple of minutes, but it was Bowdoin that found the go-ahead marker. Gia Massari came out of the corner and fired to the far post to make it 2-1 at 15:28. The Camels pulled Galizio for the extra skater with 1:56 remaining, but Conn was unable to tie the score once more, falling 2-1.

Conn outshot Bowdoin 32-28, while holding a slim 18-17 edge on face-off wins.

Galizio got the start in net, finishing with 26 saves. Sammons tallied the lone Camels goal, while Burm and Donnelly both added one assist. Both Harris and Sammons won six face-offs, as Conn finished 3-3 on the penalty kill and 0-2 on the power play.

Solotaroff-Webber got the win in goal finishing with 31 saves. Massari and McCarter led the way with a goal apiece, while Bowdoin went 0-3 on the power play and 2-2 on the penalty kill.

Conn returns to action next Saturday, as the Camels wrap up the regular season against Worcester State at 7:00 p.m. in Dayton Arena for senior day.
