AMHERST, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team dropped a 66-43 decision against Amherst College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC battle at LeFrak Gymnasium.
Three Mammoths scored in double digits led by Laura Mendell with a game-high 19 points. Amherst (16-6 overall, 4-4 NESCAC) shot 42 percent as a team and scored 27 points off 25 turnovers.
Valeria Santiago Dedos (Santa Isabel, Puerto Rico) came off the bench to pace the Camels with 12 points.
Sydney Marshall (Enfield, Conn.) grabbed a career-high 10 rebounds and finished one point shy of a double-double, and
Avery Burns (Orleans, Mass.) chipped in eight points while draining a pair of threes.
Conn couldn't overcome a slow start after shooting just 2-for-12 in the opening quarter and falling behind by a dozen. Marshall provided a pair of baskets in the period, but the Mammoths led 16-4 heading into the second and never let the margin slip below double digits the rest of the way.
The Camels bounced back in the second quarter but couldn't make up any ground. Amherst, which led 29-16 at the break, added to the margin in the second half. Santiago Dedos netted eight points in the final stanza to fuel the offense.
Conn owned a 42-36 advantage on the glass and blocked a total of five shots, including two apiece by Marshall and
Hayle Thompson (Maynard, Mass.).
Catie Donadio (Clinton, Conn.) finished with eight caroms while Thompson added seven.
Conn (10-13 overall, 0-9 NESCAC) will wrap up the regular season at Bates College on Friday, February 14 at 7:00 p.m.
