Women's Tennis Splits with UMD, Creighton

ORLANDO, Fla. – The Connecticut College women's tennis team split a pair of matches against the University of Minnesota Duluth and Creighton University on Thursday.

The Camels picked up a 7-0 victory over UMD in the morning but suffered a 5-2 setback against Creighton in the afternoon. Caitlin Cass (Newcastle, Maine) won at No. 1 singles in both matches to lead the squad.

After securing the doubles point against the Bulldogs, the Camels swept through six singles matches to post the shutout. Conn captured all six matches in straight sets, with no opponent recording more than three games in a set.

Cass got things started with a 6-2, 6-2 win at the top spot. Evin Cosar (Shrewsbury, Mass.) yielded only one game at the No. 3 spot, as did Marylove Reynolds (Little Rock, Ark.) at No. 6. Mary Ella Prendergast (Mount Pleasant, S.C.) gave up two games at No. 4 while Maya Kowalska (Feasterville-Trevose, Pa.) and Asahi Goods (Putnam Valley, N.Y.) both won by 6-3, 6-2 finals.

The duo of Chloe Steinfeld (Los Angeles, Calif.) and Tara Best (Carlisle, Mass.) earned a 6-4 victory at No. 1 doubles. Kinley Yangden (Thimphu, Bhutan) and Henrietta Waltz (Lincoln, Mass.) also teamed up at No. 3 to supply a 6-1 win.

Later in the day, the Camels dropped the doubles point but entered singles play even at 1-1. Conn earned a default win on the No. 6 singles court as Creighton played with only five players.

Cass accounted for Conn's second point of the match, rallying back against Valerie Negin after dropping the opening set. Cass rebounded to take the second set by a 6-4 tally and then prevailed in a 10-point tiebreaker in lieu of a third set.

Conn (3-5 overall) will close out its spring trip with a match against Ithaca College on Friday, March 14 at 8:00 a.m.
