NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team powered to a 17-2 win over Nichols College on Monday afternoon in a rainy non-conference showdown at Silfen Field.
The Camels scored the first 16 goals en route to their biggest margin of victory of the season.
Andrew Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) led Conn's offense with four goals and three assists while
Cole Ronan (Northport, N.Y.) also chipped in four scores.
Will Vivian (Slingerlands, N.Y.) stopped eight shots in goal to collect his first career win.
Rainville played a role in five of Conn's eight goals in the opening half. He fed
Myles Newport (Oakville, Ontario) for the game's first goal just two minutes in, and later in the quarter he found
JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) for a man-up tally that made it 3-0. Rainville then added three goals of his own before intermission, scoring once at the end of the first quarter and twice in the second.
Conn, which led 8-0 at the break, also got first-half scores from
Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.),
Sean McCarthy (West Roxbury, Mass.) and
Aidan McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.). Vivan made four saves in the half to keep the Bison off the scoreboard.
The Camels continued their dominance in the third quarter, outscoring Nichols by a 5-0 margin.
Ryan Breheny (Bridgewater, Mass.) got things started with a tally early in the period, and Ronan soon followed with his first of four goals in the half. Rainville picked up his final two points of the day with a goal and assist to Horkan, and
Patrick Atkins (Topsfield, Mass.) scored on an unassisted effort to bring the score to 13-0 after three.
The only drama that remained in the fourth quarter was if the Camels could pin down the shutout. Ronan scored three straight goals to bump the lead to 16-0 before the Bison finally got on the scoreboard. Shea Ullo scored with 5:47 left in the contest, and John Casserta added Nichols' second goal with 2:36 to go.
Daniel Smith (Smithfield, R.I.) supplied the final marker of the game, notching the first of his collegiate career.
The Camels caused a season-high 13 turnovers as a team, led by four from
Jack Anglim (Glastonbury, Conn.).
Chris Travers (Mill Valley, Calif.) also grabbed a team-high five ground balls as Conn finished with a 37-33 edge in the category.
Conn (3-2 overall) will next host Middlebury College on Sunday, March 22 at noon.
