Men's LAX Nabs Road Win at Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine – The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team picked up a 13-9 victory over Colby College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC showdown at Seaverns Field.

The Camels took the lead late in the first half and didn't trail in the second, outscoring the Mules 7-4 over the final 30 minutes. Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.) tied his career high with six goals and added an assist to lead the way. JJ Ford (Clinton, Conn.) contributed a pair of goals while Ryan Breheny (Bridgewater, Mass.) chipped in a goal and two assists.

Conn's offense kicked into gear early as Horkan potted his first goal of the day just nine seconds into the contest. Two minutes later a goal by Ford evened the score at 2-2, but the Mules responded with three straight to take their biggest lead at the midway point of the quarter.

The Camels used a 6-0 run that spanned the first and third quarters to seize control. Horkan supplied four goals during the stretch while Patrick Atkins (Topsfield, Mass.) and Declan Kuhn (Fairfield, Conn.) also tacked on markers. Kuhn put Conn in front for good with 4:27 left in the half, and Horkan expanded the 6-5 halftime lead with a pair of scores to open the third quarter.

Gavin Rothenberg scored twice in the final 6:21 of the third to pull Colby to within one heading into the final stanza. Conn got back on track with a crucial sequence that began with a long offensive possession that resulted in a goal from Ford. Dylan McGuirk (Norwell, Mass.) then won the ensuing faceoff, and within seconds the Camels found Andrew Rainville (Watertown, Conn.) on the doorstep to make it 10-7. Minutes later, Breheny bumped the lead to four with 10:55 to go in the game.

The Mules cut the deficit in half by the 8:16 mark but didn't score again. Horkan added his final tally of the day with 2:07 left, and Nick McLaughlin (Wilbraham, Mass.) added an insurance goal in the waning seconds for the final margin.

Goalie Patrick Hogan (Wyckoff, N.J.) stopped nine shots to secure his second victory in as many games. McLaughlin finished with four ground balls and caused two turnovers, as did Myles Newport (Oakville, Ontario) and Liam Doherty (Winchester, Mass.).

Conn (2-1 overall, 1-1 NESCAC) will next play at Bowdoin College on Saturday, March 15 at 1 p.m.
