CLINTON, N.Y. – The Connecticut College men's lacrosse team came up on the short end of a 12-11 decision against Hamilton College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC clash at Steuben Field.
Liam Horkan (Malden, Mass.) paced the Camels with a game-high four goals while
Aidan McAvoy (Charlotte, N.C.),
Nick McLaughlin (Wilbraham, Mass.) and
Graydon Diamond (New Canaan, Conn.) added two goals apiece.
Patrick Hogan (Wyckoff, N.J.) played every minute in goal and finished with 12 saves.
Conn trailed 3-0 after the opening quarter but stormed back in the second, outscoring Hamilton by a 7-3 margin to lead by a goal at intermission. After McLaughlin put the Camels on the scoreboard just 11 seconds into the period, Horkan supplied the next three goals before McAvoy potted a pair. McLaughlin then gave the visitors their first lead of the day at 7-6 with 3:16 to go in the half.
The second half was played in a tight window, with neither team leading by more than one until the midway point of the fourth. Diamond scored a pair of goals in the third period to keep the game even at 9-9 heading into the final stanza, and Horkan's fourth tally of the day tied the game at 10-10 with 11:31 remaining in the contest.
The Continentals scored twice within a 46-second span to take the lead for good with 7:58 to play. The Camels spent the rest of regulation trying to claw back into the game, finally cutting the deficit in half on a score by Ford with 44 seconds left. Conn lost the ensuing face-off but quickly forced a turnover, but a last-second attempt by Horkan was stopped by Hamilton goalie Jack Fried to end the game.
Zach Bucher (Verona, N.J.) led Conn's defense with a pair of caused turnovers. McLaughlin,
Dylan McGuirk (Norwell, Mass.) and
Aidan Gaudet (Cheshire, Conn.) scooped up four ground balls each. Gaudet also went 14-for-25 at the face-off spot in the contest.
