BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Connecticut College field hockey team suffered a 3-1 setback against 19th-ranked Bowdoin College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC showdown at Ryan Field.
The Camels trailed 2-0 in the second half before a score by Maddie Mason (Brentwood, N.H.) cut the deficit in half late in the third quarter. However, the Polar Bears (4-0 overall, 2-0 NESCAC) didn't allow a shot in the final stanza and tacked on an insurance goal for good measure.
Bowdoin got on the scoreboard early in the second period on a penalty stroke by Emily Ferguson and led 1-0 at halftime. Maddie Mrva added to the margin just over two minutes into the second half, scoring off a feed from Clara Noyes to extend the lead to 2-0.
The Camels responded with 5:20 left in the third, capitalizing on one of their four penalty corners in the quarter. Serena Moore (Houston, Texas) inserted the ball to Mason, who found the back of the cage for her second goal in as many games.
Ferguson netted her second goal of the day with 6:38 remaining in the game to give the Polar Bears a two-goal cushion. Goalie Lauren O'Donald finished with four saves in the victory.
Conn goalie Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) recorded seven saves in the loss. Bowdoin finished with 13 total shots and 16 penalty corners.
Conn (2-2 overall, 0-2 NESCAC) will next host Colby College on Saturday, September 20 at 11:00 a.m.
