NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Connecticut College field hockey team picked up its first NESCAC win of the season on Saturday afternoon, defeating Colby College by a 3-2 final in overtime at Silfen Field.
Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) netted the game-winning goal just 4:09 into the extra session to give the Camels their first home win of the season. She finished with a pair of scores in the contest, raising her team-leading total to four on the season.
Kellyn Scheel (Palo Alto, Calif.) also found the back of the cage—her second tally of the year—while
Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) picked up the victory in goal with three saves. Conn now owns wins in the last four meetings with Colby, which dropped to 1-4 overall (0-3 NESCAC).
Christina Sweeney scored both goals for the Mules while Ginna Jacoby recorded seven saves in goal.
Conn opened the scoring just over two minutes into the contest, capitalizing off a Colby miscue on a defensive restart. The Mules played the restart back toward their goal, and Scheel pounced in and slotted home a shot for the early 1-0 advantage.
Colby equalized before the end of the first, as Sweeney slipped a shot into the back of the cage from the right side. In the second quarter, after a shot by Scheel was blocked by a defender, McGann collected the loose ball and flicked a shot into the right side of the goal to pull ahead once more.
Conn took the 2-1 lead into the break, only to see the margin disappear in the opening minutes of the second half. Sweeney netted her second goal of the day from a tough angle on the right end line, squeezing it between Carnall and the post to even the score once again.
The Mules nearly went ahead on a penalty corner in the final minute of the third, but a defensive save by
Katie Dolan (Westminster, Mass.) kept the game knotted. Conn pressed in the fourth quarter—producing three shots and four penalty corners—but couldn't punch in the go-ahead score.
McGann put a shot on goal in the first minute of extra time but was denied. Three minutes later she got another chance, and this time she delivered the golden goal.
Maddie Mason (Brentwood, N.H.) played the ball into the scoring circle that McGann tracked down near the end line on the right side. She then proceeded to dribble around to the opposite side of the cage, where she buried a backhanded attempt that sent the crowd into a frenzy.
With the two goals, McGann moved into the top-5 all-time in program history for career goals with 32. It also marked the ninth multi-goal game of her career.
Conn (3-2 overall, 1-2 NESCAC) will next host seventh-ranked Tufts University on Sunday, September 21 at 1:00 p.m.
