Field Hockey Takes Down Roger Williams in Season Opener

BRISTOL, R.I. – The Connecticut College field hockey team opened the 2025 season—and a new coaching era—with a 3-2 victory over Roger Williams University on Wednesday evening at Bayside Field.

The Camels, who scored a pair of second-half goals and never trailed at any point, captured their first victory in a season opener since 2013. Meredith du Four (Beverly, Mass.), Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) and Kellyn Scheel (Palo Alto, Calif.) all found the back of the cage, and rookie goalie Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) supplied eight saves in her collegiate debut.

The win was also the first for the Camels under head coach Ryley van der Velde, who returned to her alma mater in April to take over coaching duties. She becomes the third coach in program history to record a win in their first game at Conn.

The Camels opened the season with a strong first half, outshooting the Hawks by a 6-2 margin en route to a 1-0 lead at intermission. The goal came with 2:41 left in the half on a redirect by du Four, who slipped behind the defense on a penalty corner and finished off an attempt by Katie Dolan (Westminster, Mass.). The goal was the first of her collegiate career.

Conn extended the lead to 2-0 just 5:37 into the second half thanks to a long shot from Bonner. After taking a feed from Sadie Gearan (Lynnfield, Mass.), Bonner delivered a rocket from the right side that snuck inside the left post for her first marker of the year.

The Hawks got on the scoreboard less than a minute later, but Scheel added to the cushion before the third quarter expired. She cleaned up a rebound in front of the cage with a backhanded flick to give the visitors a 3-1 edge with 2:05 left in the period.

The insurance goal proved vital, as Roger Williams clawed back to within one with 5:01 left in the fourth quarter. Two minutes later, the Hawks nearly tied the game on a penalty corner, but Lilly Moore's (East Sandwich, Mass.) defensive save—her second of the contest—kept the Camels in front.

Chelsea King and Maddy Monahan recorded goals for RWU, which dropped to 1-2 overall on the year.

Conn (1-0 overall) will next host Amherst College on Saturday, September 6 at 11:00 a.m.
