NEW LONDON, Conn. — The Connecticut College field hockey team gave 16th-ranked Amherst College all it could handle on Saturday afternoon, falling 4-3 in overtime on the opening weekend of NESCAC play at Silfen Field.
The Camels overcame three separate one-goal deficits in the contest, only to see the Mammoths net the golden goal just 4:44 into the extra frame. Caroline Busler supplied the game-ending tally off a feed from Emma Zhang as Amherst improved to 2-0 on the season.
Bridget McGann (West Hartford, Conn.) paced the Camels with a pair of goals while
Katie Dolan (Westminster, Mass.) notched her first career score.
Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) was strong in goal, finishing with 11 saves against 18 total shots.
After a scoreless first quarter, Amherst got on the board with 6:42 left in the half on a goal by Emily Huehn. The Mammoths took the 1-0 advantage into the halftime intermission and held an 8-5 edge in shots.
The Camels scored off a penalty corner early in the second half to even the score at 1-1. Off the insertion, the ball was played across the top of the circle to
Sadie Gearan (Lynnfield, Mass.), who rifled a shot to the front of the cage that was deflected on by McGann.
The Mammoths pulled ahead minutes later on a goal by Bella Kim and led 2-1 at the end of the third quarter. However, McGann struck once again just 1:18 into the fourth, cleaning up a rebound following a shot by
Maddie Mason (Brentwood, N.H.) on another penalty corner.
Amherst regained the lead with 10:53 to go on a tally by Isa Lattuada, but Conn had yet another answer. The Camels earned a penalty corner with just over three minutes to play in regulation, and a penalty stroke was awarded during the ensuing scrum in front of the cage. Dolan stepped up to take the attempt and promptly found the lower-left corner to knot the score at 3-3.
Each side earned a penalty corner in the opening minutes of the 7-vs.-7 overtime period, but neither could convert. The Mammoths then earned three more before Busler—who served as the inserter—was able to cash in from in front of the net.
Grace Puchalski played all 60 minutes of regulation and finished with four saves in goal for Amherst. Kate Grady took over for the Mammoths in overtime and picked up the win.
Conn (1-1 overall, 0-1 NESCAC) will next play at Wellesley College on Tuesday, September 9 at 6:00 p.m.
