WELLESLEY, Mass. — The Connecticut College field hockey team cruised to a 4-1 victory over Wellesley College on Tuesday night at Butler Stadium.
The Camels scored twice in the opening quarter and added another tally before intermission to lead 3-0 at halftime.
Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) scored a pair of goals to record the first multi-goal game of her career, and
Alex Flynn (Dhahran, Saudi Arabia) and
Maddie Mason (Brentwood, N.H.) also found their way into the scoring column.
Sadie Gearan (Lynnfield, Mass.) and
Meredith du Four (Beverly, Mass.) sparked the offense with two assists each. On the defensive side, goalie
Isabella Carnall (Malvern, Pa.) made one save while
Megan Pons (Charlotte, N.C.) supplied a defensive save.
Conn scored three goals on penalty corners on the night, the first of which came less than five minutes after the opening whistle. Following the insertion, the Camels played a pass across the top of the circle to Gearan, who put the ball to the front of the cage. Bonner was there to deflect the shot past the goalie for the early 1-0 advantage.
The Camels added to the margin with 2:57 left in the first, working the ball into the scoring circle and keeping it from going over the end line. A quick centering pass by du Four left Flynn one-on-one against the goalie, and the rookie netted her first collegiate goal to extend the lead to 2-0.
Wellesley's lone shot attempt of the half came with 1:39 left in the first quarter, but Pons cleared it off the goal line to keep the shutout intact. Mason's goal, which came with 5:12 remaining in the half, came off another penalty corner. She took a pass from du Four at the top of the circle and weaved a shot through traffic for her first goal of the year.
Wellesley got on the scoreboard less than four minutes into the second half on an attempt by Annika Schermerhorn. The Camels responded with 2:16 to go in the stanza when Bonner scored on another deflection off a penalty corner.
Conn finished the game with a 21-6 advantage in total shots and 7-0 edge in penalty corners.
The Camels have scored 10 goals through the first three games of the season, with at least three coming in each contest. The last time the program recorded three or more goals in three consecutive games came at the start of the 2012 season.
Conn (2-1 overall) will next play at Bowdoin College on Saturday, September 13 at 11:00 a.m.
