Chace's First Career Goal Lifts Women's Soccer to 1-0 Win at Salve Regina

NEWPORT, R.I. – Claire Chace's (Bristol, R.I.) first career goal pushed the Connecticut College women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Salve Regina from Toppa Field on Sunday afternoon. With the win, Conn improves to 2-1 on the year, while Salve falls to 0-2-1.

It was a slow opening 10 minutes, with both teams dealing with a steady rain, as it was Salve that produced the first shot of the contest nine minutes in, but Emily McBride (Alexandria, Va.) came up with the save. Conn responded with their first shot of the afternoon eight minutes later, but Mae Mastrullo (Hudson, Mass.) had her effort turned aside.

Zola Alcaro (Norwell, Mass.) forced another save from Seahawks' goalkeeper Emelia DaPonte, at the midway point of the half. Salve answered with three shots in a six minute stretch, but Maia Kafer (Philadelphia, Pa.) answered with three stops, as the game remained scoreless at the break.

The rain continued into the second half, with neither side generating much of anything in the opening 10 minutes. However, Conn earned a free-kick in the 58th minute and capitalized. Una McCorry (Bronxville, N.Y.) put the free-kick into the box from nearly 40-yards out, as Claire Chace (Bristol, R.I.) darted in front of Sabrina Lawless in the Seahawks goal to deflect the shot home, making it 1-0.

Salve pushed over the final half hour, looking for an equalizer, but the Camels defense held firm. With just over five minutes remaining, Chace came up with a big block, before Sara Wiejkus had a shot from outside the box go wide. The Camels closed out the final moments to come away with the 1-0 win.

Conn outshot Salve 14-13, holding a 6-4 edge on shots on target, while the Seahawks held a 6-3 advantage on corner kicks.

McBride got the start between the sticks, joining Kafer, Saylor Redfearn (Middletown, R.I.), and Yael Bugaev (Westborough, Mass.) to combine for four saves and the clean sheet. Chace notched the lone goal of the afternoon, with McCorry adding the assist. Alcaro, Mastrullo, Rian Goertz (Weston, Conn.), and Paige Maffei (Acton, Mass.) all chipped in one shot on target.

Daponte got the start in goal for Salve making three saves in 45 minutes, before being replaced by Lawless who recorded two saves.

Conn returns to action on Wednesday, as the Camels take the short trek down the road to take on neighboring Coast Guard at 6:00 p.m.
