Game Recap: Women's Ice Hockey |

Women's Hockey Denied by #4 Middlebury on Saturday

MIDDLEBURY, Vt.– The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team again gave #4 Middlebury all they could handle, before two late goals from the Panthers gave Middlebury a 4-2 win on Saturday afternoon from Kenyon Arena.

The opening 10 minutes were back-and-forth as both sides forced saves from Devon Galizio (Wayland, Mass.) and Sophia Will respectively. However, Conn opened the scoring at 11:44, on a goal from Ashley Engle (Basking Ridge, N.J.). Engle took a pass from Charlotte Harris (Ystrad Mynach, Wales) at center ice, before skating into the Middlebury zone and firing in off the post to make it 1-0. The Panthers had a late power play in the opening period, but were unable to beat Galizio as the Camels led 1-0 after one.

Conn had an early power play in the middle frame but were unable to capitalize with the extra skater, as the lead remained at one. Both goalies held strong, and it looked like the Camels would take the lead to the third, but Middlebury got on the board with 43 seconds remaining as Alyssa Frazier tied the game at one. Just 17 seconds later, Alison Giebler snuck a shot into the far post as the Panthers took a 2-1 lead into the third period.

Galizio came up with four saves early in the final period, before a great individual effort from Jess Pistorino (Charlestown, Mass.) tied the game at 1:46. Pistorino worked into the Middlebury zone going 1-on-2 and fought her way to the goal, beating Will to make it 2-2. Middlebury retook the lead with seven and a half minutes remaining after earning a 5-on-3 power play. The Camels killed off the first penalty, but Olivia McManus's shot from the point made its way through a mess of bodies to make it 3-2.

Conn had a big opportunity to even the score with four and a half minutes remaining after earning a power play. However, the Camels were unable to capitalize as Caroline Thomas redirected a pass past Galizio just as the penalty expired to put the Panthers up 4-2. Conn pulled Galizio for the extra skater, but could not cut into the deficit, falling 4-2.

Middlebury outshot Conn 36-23, while holding a 27-22 edge on face-off wins.

Galizio got the start in goal, finishing with 32 saves. Engle and Pistorino each tallied one goal, while Bonner and Harris both chipped in one assist. The Camels blocked 19 shots as a team, led by Maya Lileika (Fairfield, Conn.) who blocked a team-high three, as Conn went 4-6 on the penalty kill and 0-6 on the power play.

Will got the win in net, recording 21 saves. Frazier paced Middlebury with three points on one goal and two assists, while six other Panthers tallied at least one point.

Conn (5-4-2, 2-3-1 NESCAC) closes out their road trip on Tuesday, as the Camels travel to Purchase, N.Y. to take on Manhattanville at 7:00 p.m.
