MBB Stays Hot, Takes Down Williams

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College men's basketball team came away with an 83-68 victory over Williams College on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC clash at Luce Field House.

Elias Espinosa (Leonia, N.J.) netted a season-high 26 points and shot 6-for-8 from three as the Camels picked up their second league win of the weekend. James LaFrance (Guilford, Conn.) added 13 points while Greg Cantwell (Glen Head, N.Y.), Dylan Watson (Mount Kisco, N.Y.), Garrett Clar (Victor, N.Y.) and PJ Johnson Jr. (Marietta, Ga.) all chipped in nine points apiece.

Espinosa came out of the gates hot, drilling five three-pointers in the opening 12 minutes as the Camels seized control. Conn trailed for only 17 seconds of game time and pulled ahead for good on an Espinosa three at the 18-minute mark. His final two triples of the half came on back-to-back possessions and left the hosts with a 30-18 advantage with 8:04 to go in the stanza.

The Camels shot 10-for-19 from deep in the half and led 47-34 at the break. Espinosa led all scorers with 15 points at intermission while Jackson Rein paced Williams with 12.

Conn led by double digits for the entirety of the second half. After Williams trimmed the deficit to 11 with 14:42 to play, the Camels responded with a 10-2 run that featured threes by Espinosa and Cole Craffey (Easton, Mass.) to stem the tide.

The Ephs made one final push to get back to within 11 with 7:07 remaining, but Espinosa scored on consecutive possessions to maintain the buffer. LaFrance later added a three—his third of the game—to extend the margin to 15, and the Camels scored their final eight points from the free throw line to sew up the win.

Watson had another productive game on the glass with nine rebounds, including four on the offensive end. Cantwell added eight boards and five assists while Espinosa and Johnson grabbed four caroms apiece. Clar also finished with five assists.

The Camels cashed in from the free throw line for the second game in a row. After going 20-for-20 from the stripe against Middlebury, Conn finished 13-for-14 at the nail against the Ephs.

Rein led Williams (10-6 overall, 0-4 NESCAC) with 21 points on 7-for-13 shooting and also grabbed seven rebounds. Aidan Yates added 11 points to round out the Ephs in double figures.

Conn (13-4 overall, 2-2 NESCAC) will next host the City College of New York on Tuesday, January 20 at 7:00 p.m.
