Women's Ice Hockey Denied by #12 Colby

NEW LONDON, Conn. – The Connecticut College women's ice hockey team wrapped up their weekend series, falling to visiting #12 Colby 3-0 on Saturday afternoon from Dayton Arena.

Conn started quickly recording the first three shots in the opening three minutes, but Sydney Frank (Stillwater, N.Y.), Caitlyn O'Donnell (Revere, Mass.), and Lily Stern (Nove Zamky, Slovakia) were all denied. Colby responded with the next four shots, but Alex Erdman (Lutherville, Md.) was sharp from the outset. The teams traded chances for the rest of the period but the game remained scoreless after one.

The Camels opened the middle frame with a power play, but were unable to take advantage of the woman-advantage. The Mules upped the pressure and broke the ice just before the midway point of the period as Lulu Gray made it 1-0 at 9:26. Neither side found the net for the rest of the period as Colby took a 1-0 lead into the third.

Early in the third period, the Mules doubled their lead as Megan Martodam struck at 2:17 to make it 2-0. Conn responded with a couple of chances but Casey Chesner (Great Falls, Va.) was stopped by Ally Martiniello, while Elizabeth Bonner (Westfield, N.J.) had a shot blocked. The Camels continued to push, looking to cut the deficit, but Colby was able to capitalize on a late power play, as Maria Pierce scored at 18:54 to give the Mules the 3-0 win.

Colby outshot Conn 31-13, while Conn won 30 of 49 face-offs.

Erdman got the start in goal finishing with 28 saves. Ava Rode (Wausau, Wis.) led the way with four shots on goal, while Serena Seiple (Wilmette, Ill.) won a game-high 14 face-offs. Conn went 2-3 on the penalty kill and 0-4 on the power play.

Martiniello got the win in net stopping all 13 shots. Gray, Martodam, and Pierce led Colby with a goal a piece, while three other Mules recorded one assist, as Colby went 1-3 on the power play and 4-4 on the penalty kill.

Conn (6-6-2, 2-5-1 NESCAC) returns to action on Friday night as the Camels travel to Clinton, N.Y. to take on Hamilton at 7:00 p.m.
