MEDFORD, Mass. – The Connecticut College women's basketball team used a strong fourth quarter to power past Tufts University by a 55-38 final on Saturday afternoon in a NESCAC showdown at Cousens Gym.
The Camels opened the final period with 15 straight points to lock up their first win over the Jumbos since 2015.
Sofia Tavarez (Cortlandt Manor, N.Y.) paved the way with a game-high 20 points on 9-for-19 shooting, while
Mia Xerras (Charlotte, N.C.) and
Sydney Marshall (Enfield, Conn.) added 12 points apiece. Marshall also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds to record her first career double-double.
Tavarez netted eight points in the opening quarter as the Camels took a 10-9 lead into the second period. After the Jumbos went back up by three, Conn responded with a 17-5 spurt that included threes by
Catherine Cole (Lebanon, N.H.), Xerras and
Anique St. Laurent (Greenland, N.H.) to go up by double digits.
The Jumbos scored the final six points of the half to trail 27-23 at the break. Tavarez led all scorers with 12 points at intermission.
Tufts evened the score at 31-31 with 2:18 to go in the third quarter. Xerras responded with a three-pointer to put the Camels on top for good, and Cole added a triple before the buzzer to extend the lead to 37-33 after three.
Conn carried the momentum into the fourth, as Xerras drilled two more threes while Marshall and Tavarez each provided a pair of buckets. The Camels scored 18 straight points in all—including Cole's three to close out the third—and led 52-33 with 4:10 to play in the contest.
